Alone in a cafe

The cafe seat was meant for two

But only one showed up

An order for two coffees

But only one was drunk

The other silent and still.

Turned from hot to cold

Like the lonely man

Sitting staring into his void

The place where he had felt

So much warmth

But which was now so chilled

Unfriendly and unloved.

Setting his cup back

On the coffee stained saucer

He rose and turned his back

On the empty space

Turned up his collar

And stepped through

The already open door

To face the bitter north wind.
