The fallen monk

The monk fell to his knees

In empty desperation

Stared down the length

Of one side of the cloister

A seemingly eternal darkness

Lay before this holy man

His faith sucked from his soul

Devoid of the grace of God

Collapsing under the weight

Of his incessant doubt

After years of devotion

He had subsided into misgivings

About all he had heretofore

Held so steadfastly in his heart

A sullen broken figure

Presented itself

In all its spiritual nakedness

And spewed out its final breath
