Fly

They summoned me to grow wings,

to fly with the birds that sing.

I knelt on one knee

to praise their beauty,

and the pain on my back

felt like a whip crack.

In my heart I knew

this chance I must not eschew,

the wonder of the moment

forming in the firmament,

the sky was mine to behold

each breath I took was bold

as I flew to my heart’s content,

watched the clouds in my ascent

breathed a great heaving sigh

as I raised myself on high.
