Spare me my pain

The stream does not become the river

The child does not become the man

Building it up only to watch

it come tumbling down again

Retain the smile turned upside down

A frightened and foolish frown

A scornful remark remains

on the tip of your tongue

and I am grateful that

there it abides to spare my pain.
